Indian oil marketing companies released fresh fuel prices on Monday as global crude oil rates surged above $84 per barrel. The ethanol-free XP100 petrol in Delhi now costs Rs 167.35 per litre, while regular petrol stands at Rs 102.12 and premium XP95 at Rs 109.24 per litre. The price surge comes amid rising geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and the Strait of Hormuz.
XP100 and Ethanol-Free Fuel Explained
XP100 carries a 100-octane rating and is completely ethanol-free, unlike regular petrol and XP95 which contain ethanol blends. Indian Oil launched XP100 in December 2020 specifically for high-performance vehicles. Under the government’s Ethanol Blended Petrol (EBP) program, E20 fuel contains 20 percent ethanol and 80 percent petrol.
The Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) states that E20 is safe for vehicles designed to handle it. However, some consumers have expressed concerns online about its impact on older vehicles.
Crude Oil Prices Surge on Geopolitical Tensions
Brent crude rose nearly one percent in early Monday trade to reach $84.48 per barrel. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) was trading at $78.89 per barrel. Oil prices have jumped over five percent in the last three trading sessions. Iran has refused to engage in talks with the United States, and no agreement has been reached on reopening the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz. This has raised serious concerns about global oil supply disruptions.
Fuel Prices Across Major Indian Cities
According to Indian Oil, Delhi petrol costs Rs 102.12 per litre and diesel is at Rs 95.20. In Chennai, petrol is priced at Rs 107.77 and diesel at Rs 99.55 per litre. Mumbai residents pay Rs 111.21 for petrol and Rs 97.83 for diesel. Kolkata sees petrol at Rs 113.51 and diesel at Rs 99.82 per litre. In Noida, petrol costs Rs 102.12 and diesel is Rs 95.56. Lucknow has the cheapest petrol at Rs 101.86 and diesel at Rs 95.36 per litre. Patna quotes petrol at Rs 112.70 and diesel at Rs 99.87. Jaipur petrol is Rs 112.66 and diesel Rs 97.78. Bhopal petrol is Rs 114.65 and diesel Rs 99.74. Indore petrol is Rs 114.61 and diesel Rs 99.70 per litre.
