A sore throat is a very common problem when the weather changes. A warm herbal kadha can ease the discomfort right at home. The key is to match the right ingredients to your specific symptom.

Mulethi and Saunf Kadha for Sore Throat

For a scratchy throat, mulethi and saunf are trusted helpers. Mulethi, or licorice, has traditionally been used to calm the throat. Saunf, or fennel, supports digestion and adds its own comfort. Take half a teaspoon of mulethi powder for this kadha. Mix it with one teaspoon of crushed saunf in hot water. Cover the vessel and let it steep for five to seven minutes. Then sip the kadha slowly, a little at a time.

Pipli, Ginger and Honey for Cough and Chest Congestion

Cough and chest tightness usually involve swollen airways and extra mucus. Pipli, ginger and honey offer relief in such cases. Pipli and ginger give warmth and comfort to the throat. Honey is a traditional aid that helps calm a cough. Mix a pinch of pipli with dry ginger and honey, then consume it. Do not give honey to children below one year of age.

Ajwain and Black Pepper Water for Cold

For cold and chest tightness, ajwain and black pepper water works well. Ajwain, or carom seeds, contains aromatic compounds such as thymol. Black pepper provides piperine, a key active element. Traditionally, both are used as warming remedies for colds. Boil one cup of water on a low flame for this drink. Add half a teaspoon of ajwain and two to three crushed black peppercorns. Drink it warm, slowly, in small sips.
