Ravichandran Ashwin has strongly criticised Rishabh Pant’s shot selection during India’s Test series against Sri Lanka, saying the wicketkeeper-batter’s aggressive identity cannot be used as an excuse for poor decisions. The former India spinner spoke on his YouTube channel ‘Ash ki Baat’ and made it clear that his criticism was not about Pant’s ability but about his situational awareness.
Ashwin Says Pant’s Performance Did Not Meet Expectations
Ashwin expressed disappointment that Pant’s performances in the two-Test series did not live up to expectations. Pant scored 168 runs in the series but his shot choices frustrated the veteran spinner. Ashwin said Sonal Dinusha had a good strike rate too but the difference was Pant’s high-risk options at crucial moments.
Pant’s Aggressive Approach Under Fire
The former spinner argued that Pant, who has now played 50 Tests, needs to understand when the team needs aggression and when restraint is required. Ashwin said that once you have the game in your hands, the excuse of ‘this is how Rishabh plays’ does not hold value. What matters is what the team needs at that moment.
Ashwin Cites Sehwag and Gilchrist as Examples
Ashwin referenced two of Test cricket’s most dangerous batters – Virender Sehwag and Adam Gilchrist – to make his point. He explained that an aggressive style does not mean ignoring game awareness. He believes Pant can become a better player by finding the right balance between natural aggression and situational demands.

Ashwin reminded that while Pant played brilliant knocks in Sydney and Brisbane, those matches were not won without Washington Sundar and Shardul Thakur. He stressed that building and winning a Test match needs 11 cricketers but losing one requires just one foolish moment. Ashwin urged that no player should receive special treatment and said Yashasvi Jaiswal is equally talented. He concluded that the day Pant accepts honest feedback, he will become a true all-format player for India.
