Former England captain Kevin Pietersen is back in the national setup. The 46-year-old has been appointed specialist mentor for England’s white-ball teams. His role will run through the ICC Cricket World Cup 2027 in South Africa.
Pietersen Joins McCullum’s Coaching Staff
Pietersen will link up with head coach Brendon McCullum this month. He will join the T20 and ODI series against Sri Lanka. He will also travel with the team on Australia and South Africa tours this year. Home series against Pakistan and New Zealand follow before the World Cup.
The coaching staff also includes Marcus Trescothick, Tim Southee, Jeetan Patel, and Sarah Taylor.
A Major Return After a Decade Away
Pietersen last played for England in 2014. His international career ended after the 2013-14 Ashes tour. This appointment is a major shift in his relationship with English cricket. His new role focuses on helping McCullum develop England’s white-ball players.

Pietersen said he is proud to help the team win the World Cup in South Africa. Wearing the England jersey for the first time since 2014 is a huge honour for him. He called the white-ball squad talented and full of skilled players. He is eager to work with them and unlock their full potential.

McCullum said he deeply respects Pietersen and admires his achievements. He praised the impact Pietersen has had on English cricket. His experience, knowledge, and stature make him a great addition to the team. McCullum is especially excited for the batters to work with Pietersen at the highest level.
A Proven Record With Bat and as Mentor
Pietersen played 136 ODIs and 37 T20Is for England. He scored more than 5,500 runs across both formats. He also scored 8,181 runs in 104 Test matches. He played a key role in England’s 2010 T20 World Cup triumph.
He has similar mentoring experience in franchise cricket. Pietersen worked as a mentor for Delhi Capitals during IPL 2025. His new England stint will now run until the World Cup campaign.
