Teacher and student
India has 17.32 lakh teachers, a 27% increase over 10 years, according to figures reported for World Teacher’s Day. At the same time, 34% of teacher posts remain vacant, meaning more than one in three posts is unfilled.
Teacher numbers rose over a decade
The reported workforce figure is 17.32 lakh, or 1,732,000 teachers. The 27% rise compares the current figure with the level 10 years earlier. Using those two figures, the earlier workforce works out to approximately 13.64 lakh, while the increase is about 3.68 lakh teachers.

Those earlier and net-growth numbers are calculations based on the reported total and percentage, rather than separately stated headcounts. They are approximate because the 27% increase is expressed as a rounded percentage. The figures describe growth over a decade; they do not identify a particular start year for that comparison.
- Teacher count reported: 17.32 lakh
- Increase over 10 years: 27%
- Teacher posts vacant: 34%
- Approximate workforce 10 years earlier: 13.64 lakh
- Approximate increase in teacher numbers: 3.68 lakh
Vacancies account for 34% of posts
The 34% vacancy figure means that, for every 100 posts in the reported measure, 34 are vacant and the remaining 66 are not vacant. Put another way, vacancies amount to just over one-third of the posts, while the non-vacant share is close to two-thirds.
On the same illustrative scale of 1,000 posts, a 34% vacancy rate corresponds to 340 vacant posts and 660 posts that are not vacant. These are percentage-based examples, not separate reported totals for India. The national teacher count and the vacancy rate describe different measures: one is a headcount of teachers, while the other is the share of posts left vacant.
The figures place teacher workforce growth and vacancies side by side for World Teacher’s Day. A 27% rise over 10 years records an increase in the number of teachers, but the separate 34% vacancy rate shows that a substantial share of posts remains unfilled. The observance is known internationally as World Teachers’ Day. The figures were updated on Oct 05, 2026.
