Captain Fresh Expands Global Seafood Footprint by Acquiring Spain’s Tuna Processor Frime

Captain Fresh, a Bengaluru-based seafood supply chain startup, has acquired Frime, a Spain-headquartered tuna processing and distribution company, in a move that strengthens the Indian firm’s foothold in Europe and advances its global expansion strategy.

About Frime and strategic rationale

Founded in 1977 and based near Barcelona, Frime is among Europe’s leading processors of sustainably sourced yellowfin tuna. The company supplies tuna products to customers in more than 30 countries and reports annual revenues in excess of €180 million.

Frime operates multiple production sites with extensive capacity for processing frozen and fresh tuna as well as semi-preserved seafood products. Integrating these facilities into Captain Fresh’s network provides the Indian startup with an established processing base in Europe and immediate access to Frime’s distribution channels.

Expansion of product portfolio and market reach

The acquisition will enable Captain Fresh to broaden its tuna portfolio and accelerate tuna distribution into the United States through its existing logistics and supply-chain infrastructure. The startup also plans to scale other seafood categories—such as shrimp, lobster and salmon—across European markets leveraging Frime’s processing capabilities and market relationships.

Frime’s current leadership team is expected to remain in place under the Captain Fresh group to ensure operational continuity while supporting faster international expansion.

Part of a wider growth strategy

Captain Fresh has been building a global seafood ecosystem through a series of international acquisitions and partnerships across the United States and Europe. These moves have helped the company create an integrated network connecting fisheries, processors, distributors and retailers, underpinned by a technology-driven supply chain platform.

Management says the deal enhances its distribution reach and processing footprint, positioning the company to meet rising global demand for high-quality seafood across Europe, North America and Asia.

Link to potential IPO

The Frime acquisition is closely tied to Captain Fresh’s broader growth and capital-market plans. The company had temporarily withdrawn a draft IPO filing in India to complete overseas regulatory clearances related to the deal. With the acquisition now closed, Captain Fresh is expected to continue consolidating its international operations as it progresses toward a potential public listing.
