India’s electric vehicle market has achieved a historic milestone. A record 3,29,848 EVs were delivered across four segments in July 2026. This marks a 67% surge from the 1,97,340 units sold in July 2025. The growing consumer appetite for electric mobility is reshaping the Indian auto landscape.
Record-Breaking Performance Across Segments
The EV industry registered strong growth in two sub-segments. Electric two-wheelers and commercial vehicles posted their highest-ever monthly retail sales. Passenger vehicles and e-rickshaws recorded their second-best monthly figures. On average, 10,640 EVs were sold every single day in July 2026.
Consecutive Month Above 3 Lakh Mark
This was the second straight month that EV sales crossed 3 lakh units. June 2026 saw 3,10,340 units sold. Month-on-month growth stood at a healthy 6%. The EV penetration rate rose sharply from 9.6% in July 2025 to 12.7% in July 2026, showing deeper market adoption.
Fuel Price Hikes Push Buyers Toward EVs
Multiple fuel price hikes in May 2026 made petrol, diesel, and CNG more expensive. Customer hesitation over the E20 fuel transition is also steering buyers toward EVs and CNG vehicles. These economic and environmental factors are accelerating India’s shift to electric mobility at an unprecedented pace.
Two-Wheeler Segment Leads the Charge
The electric two-wheeler segment crossed 2,00,000 monthly sales for the first time. A total of 2,04,833 e-scooters, e-motorcycles, and e-mopeds were delivered in July. This marks an 89% year-on-year jump from 1,08,515 units in July 2025. These two-wheelers accounted for 62% of all EVs sold in July. TVS Motor Company sold a record 55,000-plus electric scooters. Bajaj Auto sold over 45,000 Chetak units during the same period.
Market Share Shifts Across Categories
Electric two-wheelers increased their share from 55% to 62% year-on-year. Passenger EV share rose from 9% to 10%. Commercial EV share hit 1% for the first time. However, electric three-wheeler share dropped from 35% to 27% during the same period, reflecting a shift in EV adoption patterns across vehicle categories.
