India-focused cooling startup Optimist raises $12M seed round led by Accel and Arkam Ventures

Cooling startup Optimist has raised $12 million (about ₹105 crore) in a seed round led by Accel and Arkam Ventures, with participation from a group of angel investors. The funding underscores investor confidence in Optimist’s bid to develop air‑conditioning solutions tailored specifically to India’s heat, humidity and power challenges.

Founders, focus and market opportunity

Founded in 2024 by Ashish Goel, former CEO and co‑founder of Urban Ladder, and Pranav Chopra, Optimist positions itself at the junction of consumer durables and climate tech. The company aims to address persistent shortcomings in the Indian cooling market, where many air conditioners are adaptations of designs meant for milder climates and therefore underperform during prolonged heatwaves.

Common problems include high electricity consumption, poor performance under voltage fluctuations, and limited durability under long daily usage—issues that are pronounced across large parts of India. Optimist says its products are being engineered from a clean slate to meet these specific conditions.

Engineering-led product development

Optimist has built an in‑house R&D centre, Nalanda, in Gurugram to test prototypes against real‑world Indian climate scenarios. The company emphasises engineering‑led development, iterating with climate data and customer feedback to optimise energy efficiency, robustness and operational reliability.

By owning research, prototyping and manufacturing decisions, Optimist aims to avoid the trade‑offs typical of mass‑market cooling appliances and deliver longer‑lasting, more energy‑efficient products that reduce monthly electricity bills for consumers.

Use of funds

The $12 million infusion will be deployed across manufacturing scale‑up, deeper R&D, and go‑to‑market execution. A large share will build manufacturing capacity to meet volume requirements without compromising quality, while continued investment in product engineering will focus on efficiency, durability and performance under variable power supply.

Funds will also be used for brand building and market preparation ahead of Optimist’s first commercial launch, as the company seeks to compete on product value and reliability rather than price alone.

Launch timeline and distribution strategy

Optimist plans to introduce its initial range of air conditioners by February 2026, targeting heat‑intensive and high‑demand regions including Delhi NCR, Rajasthan, Telangana and Bengaluru. The rollout will expand to other major Indian cities over time.

The company intends to sell primarily via a direct‑to‑consumer model supported by exclusive brand outlets to maintain control over customer experience and after‑sales service.

Context and outlook

With rising temperatures and growing strain on India’s power infrastructure, demand for climate‑appropriate, energy‑efficient cooling solutions is increasing. Investors backing Optimist view the startup as a strategic play on climate resilience and India‑specific product innovation.

Equipped with experienced founders, a focused engineering approach and fresh capital, Optimist aims to challenge conventional air‑conditioning brands by delivering cooling solutions designed for India’s unique environmental and infrastructural realities.
