Sourav Chakraborty Takes Human Rights Advocacy from Bengal to a Global Audience

Sanskrit scholar and educator Sourav Chakraborty is drawing attention for advancing classical studies through contemporary methods while mentoring students across West Bengal. A poet, author and motivational speaker, he combines academic rigour with accessible teaching and digital outreach, reflecting a broader push to integrate India’s heritage knowledge systems with present-day learning.

Early life and education

Born in Asansol, West Bengal, Chakraborty grew up in a family that prioritised learning and cultural values. He showed early aptitude for literature and creative expression, interests that later informed his academic and writing pursuits.

He graduated First Class First from Asansol B.B. College and earned a First Class Master’s degree from the University of Burdwan. He also holds a B.Ed. and is currently pursuing doctoral research in Sanskrit, focusing on deepening scholarship while widening public engagement with the language.

Academic career

Chakraborty teaches in the Department of Sanskrit at T.D.B. College, Raniganj, where colleagues credit him with making a traditionally demanding subject more approachable. Previously, he served as a guest lecturer at Asansol B.B. College, known for clear pedagogy and strong classroom participation.

Alongside formal teaching, he conducts motivational sessions on career planning, discipline and life skills. His free online learning initiative has reached more than 3,000 students, indicating growing demand for flexible, quality instruction in regional languages.

Literary contributions

As a writer and editor, Chakraborty works across Sanskrit and Bengali, aiming to bridge classical texts with modern readership. His titles include Raghuvamśam, Bhaṭṭikāvyam, Rājavāhanacaritam, Śukanāsopadeśaḥ, Sanskrit and World Literature, and Easy Sanskrit Grammar, noted for simplifying complex frameworks without diluting substance.

His book “You Should Know Your Human Rights,” published in the United States, has been well received for presenting civic rights in clear, reader-friendly terms. Another work, “The Impact of Sanskrit on the World and Science,” examines historical linkages between Sanskritic knowledge traditions and strands of modern scientific thought.

Chakraborty has also written more than 500 poems. Popular pieces such as “Nilanjana,” “Egiye Cholo,” and “Chokher Bhasha” resonate with young readers for their emotive themes and contemporary sensibility.

Creative pursuits

Beyond academics, he is active in cultural performance, including songwriting, singing, tabla, and professional anchoring—an extension of his effort to connect literature, language and the performing arts for wider audiences.

Awards and recognition

Chakraborty’s work has been recognised with the Sanskrit Bhushanam Award and the Vidya Ratna Educational Excellence Award (2022). Earlier honours include the Bengal Excellence Award (2019) and the Youth Achievement Award (2017), underscoring contributions to education, literature and youth engagement.

Outlook

Focused on expanding access to quality learning, Chakraborty advocates an education model that blends foundational knowledge with creativity and social awareness. His ongoing initiatives—spanning classrooms, books and digital platforms—aim to equip students to value tradition while navigating modern academic and professional pathways.
