Asia-focused private equity firm TR Capital will invest $1 billion in India over the next five years, signalling strong confidence in the country’s growing private markets. The firm plans to deploy roughly $200 million annually, with a primary emphasis on secondary transactions that buy shares from existing investors to provide liquidity.
Background and strategy
Founded in 2007, TR Capital manages about $1.5 billion and has completed more than 50 transactions across the Asia-Pacific region. Its investors include pension funds, sovereign wealth funds and family offices. The firm entered the Indian market in 2008 and has steadily tracked opportunities there as exits via IPOs have slowed and stretched timelines have increased.
Against this backdrop, demand for liquidity solutions has risen, creating scope for secondary-focused private equity players. TR Capital’s strategy is to supply that liquidity by acquiring stakes from early backers and other holders, enabling portfolio realisations without relying solely on public listings.
Leadership and India expansion
TR Capital has appointed Umang Agarwal as Managing Director and Co-Head for India. Agarwal joins from Eight Roads Ventures and brings sector experience across fintech, enterprise software and consumer businesses, along with prior consulting experience at BCG India.
The firm has also added senior hires Kushal Agarwal and Sagar Sheth to its India team. To bolster its local presence, TR Capital has opened a new office in Bengaluru, complementing existing bases in Mumbai and the Delhi National Capital Region.
Sector focus and deal pipeline
TR Capital will concentrate on high-growth sectors such as technology, financial services, healthcare and consumer brands, while also exploring opportunities in artificial intelligence and advanced manufacturing. The firm cites prior investments in India including Flipkart, Lenskart, BigBasket and Whatfix.
With valuations having corrected in some segments, TR Capital is targeting strong companies at attractive prices. It is reviewing multiple opportunities, including portfolio-level secondary transactions that bundle several companies together to achieve scale and diversification.
Market outlook
India’s secondary market has expanded rapidly, attracting more local and international participants and increasing competition for quality assets. TR Capital aims to leverage its experience in the region to play an expanded role in India’s ecosystem by offering tailored liquidity solutions and structured secondary purchases.
