Bihar Engineer Subrat Shandilya Builds India’s First Compact Jet Engine, Aims for Domestic Aerospace Manufacturing Hub

Subrat Shandilya, a young aerospace engineer and entrepreneur from Bihar, is developing India’s first indigenous compact jet engine through his startup Shandilya Aerospace. The 2 kilonewton category engine is being pitched in Patna and could establish the country’s first compact jet propulsion manufacturing plant in Bihar.

From Graphic Era to DARPA Recognition

Subrat holds an aerospace engineering degree from Graphic Era Deemed University in Uttarakhand. He started proving his skills in drone and aircraft design during his college years. His aircraft concept was selected for the prestigious DARPA Lift Challenge in the United States, ranking among the top 72 designs from over 500 entries worldwide. This early recognition put him on the global aerospace map.

Metal 3D Printing Cuts Costs

Shandilya Aerospace uses metal 3D printing technology to simplify engine production. This modern technique creates complex components in fewer steps and less time compared to traditional methods. It enables faster prototype testing and sharply reduces manufacturing costs, making compact jet engines more affordable for various applications.

Custom Engines for UAVs and Missions

Traditional jet engines are built for long operational life and high cost. Subrat believes not every aerospace mission needs such expensive hardware. His compact jet engines are primarily meant for unmanned aerial vehicles and other aerospace platforms. Each engine can be customized according to specific mission requirements, optimizing performance and cost.

Bihar’s Aerospace Future

Subrat, son of IGNOU employees Sanjeev Mukesh and Meenakshi, aims to make Bihar a new hub for aerospace manufacturing. His project presentation is currently under evaluation in Patna. If approved, the facility will produce indigenous propulsion systems and inspire millions of students across India to pursue big dreams through technology and innovation. The young engineer represents a new generation of Indian innovators building critical defence technology at home.
