Gautam Adani witnessed his net worth crash by Rs 9 lakh crore in a single day on Monday as MSCI rebalancing triggered a severe selloff across Adani group stocks. The Bloomberg Billionaire Index ranked him as the biggest loser of the day. His wealth tumbled by USD 9.50 billion to settle at USD 103 billion, pushing him down to 19th place globally.

Adani Stocks Tumble Across the Board

Adani Enterprises led the decline with a sharp 6.4 percent drop to Rs 2,965.70. Adani Energy Solutions fell 7.4 percent to Rs 1,470.10. Adani Ports slipped 3.36 percent to Rs 1,650.10. Adani Power declined 4.06 percent to Rs 204.00. Adani Green Energy dropped over 3 percent to Rs 1,262.90. Adani Total Gas fell 2.59 percent to Rs 620. Ambuja Cements and ACC also declined by 2.44 percent and 1.81 percent respectively. The broad-based selloff erased billions in market value across the group.

MSCI August Review Drives Volatility

The sharp decline came ahead of MSCI’s August 2026 rebalancing review. MSCI added Lenskart, Laurus Labs, Adani Energy Solutions and Groww to its Global Index. It also raised the weightage of Adani Enterprises, Adani Ports and Adani Power in the index. Adani Enterprises saw a potential fund flow of USD 202 million while Adani Ports had USD 77 million. Adani Energy Solutions attracted an estimated USD 310 million in investment flow. Passive funds tracking the index usually adjust portfolios according to these weight changes.

Market Analysts Cite Risk Aversion

Despite higher weightage typically driving buying from ETFs and passive funds, Adani stocks fell sharply on Monday. Analysts attributed the decline to broad market risk aversion and increased volatility before the MSCI rebalancing took effect. No new adverse news about the group emerged during the trading session. The correction appears driven purely by market dynamics rather than any fundamental issue. Adani now holds the 19th position on the global rich list with a net worth of USD 103 billion.
