Apple announced a sweeping leadership transition, record quarterly earnings, and deeper AI integration across its ecosystem, underscoring a strategic pivot towards services, on‑device intelligence, and diversified manufacturing. The moves position the iPhone maker to sharpen its competitive edge while balancing growth, privacy, and supply-chain resilience.
Tim Cook will step down as Chief Executive Officer on 1 September 2026 to become Executive Chairman. John Ternus, currently leading hardware engineering, has been named CEO, and Johny Srouji will serve as Chief Hardware Officer, formalising the roles of two long-time architects of Apple’s silicon and device strategy. The transition marks the most significant leadership shift at Apple in over a decade, signalling continuity in product execution and chip development.
Apple reported record Q2 2026 revenue of $111.2 billion, a 17% year-on-year rise driven by robust iPhone demand, particularly the iPhone 17 series. The board approved a $100 billion share repurchase programme, reflecting confidence in long-term cash generation. In line with its “China Plus One” approach, Apple is expanding manufacturing in India and Vietnam, with a target of producing 25% of iPhones in India by 2027—part of a wider effort to derisk supply chains and tap local ecosystems.
AI partnership and software roadmap
Apple has struck a multi-year AI partnership with Google, reportedly worth around $1 billion annually, to integrate Gemini 2.5 Pro into Siri. After evaluating rivals including OpenAI and Anthropic, Apple opted for Google citing infrastructure scale and cost efficiency. The company said user data will be protected via its Private Cloud Compute framework, designed to process sensitive requests on Apple-controlled servers with strict security guarantees.
iOS 26 introduced a new “Liquid Glass” design language, Adaptive Power features, and expanded accessibility tools. Following user feedback about bugs and battery drain, Apple is prioritising performance and reliability in iOS 27, internally likened to a “Snow Leopard”-style stability release. The software plan underscores a balance between rapid feature rollout and platform hardening.
Siri’s upgrade and device pipeline
Siri is being overhauled into a more capable AI assistant. The rollout will proceed in phases: first, on-screen awareness and advanced email summaries; next, full conversational AI and multi-app automation with iOS 27. Apple is also introducing an Extensions system to let users access and switch between select third-party AI models, including options such as GPT and Claude, for specialised tasks.
On hardware, Apple is preparing a new slate of devices reportedly including a foldable iPhone, a MacBook Neo, and a second-generation Vision Pro. The company is strengthening satellite connectivity through industry partnerships, laying groundwork for future 5G satellite capabilities to enhance reliability in low-coverage areas.
