State-owned Indraprastha Gas Limited (IGL) has raised CNG prices by Rs 3.89 per kilogram across Delhi-NCR, marking the fifth price hike this year. The new rates took effect from Saturday morning, August 29, as India continues to bear the brunt of rising global energy prices triggered by the ongoing Middle East conflict. The hike comes after a three-month pause since May when IGL had raised CNG rates by up to Rs 6 per kilogram within just 10 days.
New CNG Rates Across Delhi-NCR Cities
In Delhi, CNG now costs Rs 86.98 per kilogram, up from the previous rate. Neighboring Noida saw the steepest price at Rs 95.59 per kilogram. Meerut and Muzaffarnagar both recorded Rs 95.47 per kilogram, while Shamli also touched Rs 95.47 per kilogram. Gurugram residents will pay Rs 92.01 per kilogram, and Rewari customers face a rate of Rs 91.59 per kilogram. The price variations across cities stem from differing VAT rates imposed by individual state governments.
IGL Cites Surging International LNG Prices
IGL said in an official statement that international LNG prices have risen sharply, significantly increasing the company’s input costs. The gas distributor described the Rs 3.89 per kilogram hike as necessary to cover these higher expenses. The company noted that the ongoing closure of the Strait of Hormuz has disrupted global energy supplies and pushed up prices worldwide.
India’s LNG Import Dependency Bites Hard
India relies heavily on imported LNG to meet its domestic energy needs. With the Strait of Hormuz effectively shut due to the Iran-US conflict, India has been forced to buy LNG at much higher rates from alternative sources. This has directly impacted CNG prices since compressed natural gas is derived from LNG. Industry experts say consumers should not expect relief until the geopolitical situation in West Asia normalizes, which could take months.
First CNG Price Revision Since May Spike
This is the first CNG price revision by IGL since May, when the company raised rates by Rs 6 per kilogram within a 10-day span. That sharp increase had already pushed CNG prices to record levels in Delhi-NCR. With cumulative hikes now exceeding Rs 9 per kilogram since the start of 2026, commuters and transport operators dependent on CNG face mounting fuel costs with no immediate respite in sight.
