Kuwait stunned Pakistan by sending a top defense delegation to New Delhi just one day after signing a major defense agreement with Islamabad. The move has reshaped West Asia’s diplomatic landscape as both India and Kuwait deepen their strategic military ties.
Historic First JDC Meeting
The inaugural Joint Defense Committee (JDC) meeting between India and Kuwait took place in New Delhi on August 30. The talks focused on military training, joint exercises, defense industry collaboration, and research and development. The defense ministry called the meeting a milestone in bilateral ties.
December 2024 MoU Bears Fruit
This breakthrough follows Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s December 2024 visit to Kuwait. During that visit, both nations signed a defense cooperation Memorandum of Understanding. Diplomatic relations between India and Kuwait were established in 1962 and have remained strong since then.
High-Level Delegations
The Kuwaiti delegation was led by Brigadier General Raed Al-Sakran from the defense ministry. A five-member team accompanied him. India’s Joint Secretary Amitabh Prasad led the Indian side. The Indian team included senior officers from all three armed forces, DRDO, defense production, armed forces medical services, and external affairs.
Pakistan Deal Preceded India Visit
Just one day earlier, Kuwait signed a defense agreement with Pakistan in Rawalpindi. Kuwaiti Defense Minister Sheikh Abdullah Ali Al-Sabah met Pakistan Defense Minister Khawaja Asif to finalize the Protocol Agreement-2026. Kuwait’s Chief of General Staff Lieutenant General Khalid Al-Sharyan attended the meeting. The new agreement extends the 2023 defense cooperation pact between the two nations. Under this deal, Pakistani forces will provide military training, capacity building, border management, and technical assistance to Kuwait.
Strategic Balance in West Asia
By engaging both India and Pakistan simultaneously, Kuwait has demonstrated a balanced diplomatic approach. The back-to-back meetings highlight Kuwait’s strategy to maintain strong defense ties with both South Asian powers while leveraging its position in West Asia.
