The compact SUV overtook several Maruti Suzuki models to claim the top spot in the monthly sales race. Industry data reveals strong demand for both SUVs and hatchbacks across the Indian market.

Tata Punch Sales Surge 99 Percent Year-on-Year

Tata Punch recorded 21,320 sales in August 2026 compared to 10,704 units in August 2025. The subcompact SUV is powered by a 1.2-litre Revotron petrol engine producing 86bhp and 115Nm torque. It also comes in an iCNG variant with twin-cylinder technology. The car holds a five-star Global NCAP safety rating. Ex-showroom prices start at Rs 6.13 lakh and go up to Rs 10.20 lakh.

Maruti WagonR and Swift Take Second and Third Spots

Maruti Suzuki WagonR secured the second position with 20,180 units sold, marking a 39 percent year-on-year increase. Maruti Swift ranked third with 19,832 units, registering an impressive 60 percent growth over August 2025. Maruti Fronx followed closely in fourth place with 18,730 units, up 51 percent year-on-year.

Ertiga, Nexon and Dzire Hold the Middle Positions

Maruti Ertiga took fifth place with 18,516 units but showed zero growth compared to last year. Tata Nexon secured sixth with 18,431 units, growing 32 percent year-on-year. Maruti Dzire came seventh with 18,418 units, up 12 percent from August 2025. All three models continue to attract strong buyer interest in their respective segments.

Creta, Baleno and Scorpio Close the Top 10 Rankings

Hyundai Creta ranked eighth with 16,288 units, posting just 2 percent growth for the month. Maruti Baleno took ninth place with 15,746 units, up 25 percent year-on-year. Mahindra Scorpio rounded out the top 10 with 15,576 units, achieving a strong 58 percent growth in August 2026. The sales data reflects the evolving preferences of Indian car buyers.

Industry Trends for August 2026

Indian car buyers continue to favour SUVs and compact hatchbacks. Tata Punch has emerged as a clear leader in the volume segment. Maruti Suzuki dominates with five models in the top 10 list. The overall market shows robust year-on-year growth across most segments.
