Toyota Rumion posted a remarkable 356 percent year-on-year sales growth in July 2026, far outpacing the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga’s 30 percent gain. The Rumion sold 2,632 units last month while the Ertiga delivered 21,606 units, an eightfold volume gap. Despite the lower base, the growth rate difference stands at eleven times in the Rumion’s favour.

Shared Platform But Diverging Trajectories

Both MPVs share the same platform with 33 of 36 attributes in common from design to engine calibration. Ertiga remains India’s top-selling seven-seater but its growth is slowing as the segment matures. Rumion leverages Toyota’s brand trust and stronger resale value to attract buyers moving up from Ertiga. Both models offer CNG variants and serve commercial fleets heavily where running cost matters most.

Powertrain And Claimed Efficiency

The Rumion uses a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine producing 102 bhp and 137 Nm of torque. Buyers choose between a five-speed manual or a six-speed torque converter automatic. The CNG version delivers 87 bhp and 121.5 Nm paired only with a five-speed manual gearbox. Claimed mileage stands at 20.51 kmpl for petrol and 26.11 km per kg for CNG under standard test conditions.

Real-World Mileage Test Results

CarWale tested the petrol automatic variant on city and highway routes in mixed traffic. City mileage came in at 14 kmpl while highway returned 19 kmpl. The combined average of 16.55 kmpl falls short of the claim but remains respectable for a seven-seater automatic MPV carrying passengers and luggage.

Features And Safety Equipment

The cabin includes a seven-inch touchscreen with wireless smartphone connectivity, steering-mounted audio and calling controls, automatic climate control, rear AC vents for second-row comfort and Toyota i-Connect telematics with over 55 connected features. Safety kit covers dual front airbags, hill hold assist, electronic stability control, ISOFIX child seat mounts on the second row, rear parking sensors and seat belt reminders for all seats.

Market Position And Buyer Preference

Rumion’s faster growth signals shifting buyer preference toward Toyota’s ownership experience despite the higher price tag. Ertiga’s volume lead remains intact but the gap in growth momentum suggests Rumion could gain share steadily in the coming quarters as more fleet operators evaluate total cost of ownership.
