A Flydubai Boeing 737 Max flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv faced a life-threatening crisis when the aircraft suddenly lost altitude at an alarming rate. Expert analysis later revealed that a mere 40-second delay in responding could have resulted in a catastrophic crash. The quick thinking of the crew and passengers prevented tragedy, saving 174 lives on board.

Technical Analysis Shows Narrow Escape

Israeli Air Force veteran Alon Pereg, with 28 years of service, stated that if the aircraft’s handling had been delayed by another 40 seconds, the Boeing 737 Max would have crashed. The plane descended from 34,000 feet to 17,000 feet in just 60 seconds, losing half its altitude in the first 40 seconds. During this rapid descent, speed increased dangerously close to supersonic levels of 1,235 km/h.

Aircraft Structural Integrity Maintained

Despite approaching supersonic speed, the front section of the aircraft remained undamaged. However, the rear radar unit broke off and separated from the fuselage. This radar is crucial for directional control, yet the aircraft remained stable due to the pilot’s presence of mind. American pilot Bud Patterson noted the jet was flying approximately 185 km/h faster than its maximum certified speed, describing the outcome as nothing short of miraculous.

Captain Smit Machchar’s Heroic Actions

Amid the technical crisis, Indian pilot Captain Smit Machchar demonstrated extraordinary courage during a violent cockpit attack. Badly injured and bleeding, he refused to yield, opening the cockpit door and collaborating with Israeli passengers to subdue the assailant. Their combined efforts ensured the safety of all 174 occupants aboard the flight.

Global Recognition for Courage

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu praised Captain Machchar in an interview, crediting him with helping avert another 9/11-like tragedy. American President Donald Trump, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, and numerous international leaders also hailed the pilot as a true hero. The incident occurred on Wednesday as the aircraft approached Israeli airspace.
