India is rolling out a new digital check-in system for hotels that eliminates the need for Aadhaar card photocopies. Travelers will now verify their identity using a QR code from the Aadhaar app or an OTP sent to their registered mobile number. The reform aims to streamline check-in while strengthening data privacy for millions of hotel guests across the country.
How the New QR Code Verification Works
Under the new rules, hotel staff will ask guests to display a QR code from their Aadhaar app at check-in. This replaces the old practice of submitting a physical photocopy of the Aadhaar card. The QR code contains encrypted identity details that the hotel can scan for instant, secure verification.
OTP-Based Identity Confirmation as an Alternative
Guests who prefer not to use the QR code can opt for OTP-based identity confirmation instead. A one-time password is sent to the guest’s registered mobile number to verify their identity. This method works just like the OTP process used for online banking, digital payments, and other essential services. It gives travelers a convenient backup option for verification.
Stronger Privacy Protection and Faster Check-in
Requiring Aadhaar photocopies has long raised concerns about personal data security. Paper copies contain sensitive information like name, address, and other identity details that can be misused. The digital system ensures guest data is handled more securely and reduces the need for hotels to store physical documents. The new process also speeds up check-in, cuts down on paperwork, and reduces paper waste. Guests no longer need to search for photocopy shops near hotels.
Part of India’s Broader Digital Governance Push
The updated check-in rules are part of India’s wider effort to digitize identity verification across multiple services. QR codes, OTP confirmations, and app-based methods are becoming the new standard. The system makes hotel stays more convenient while putting guest privacy first.
