Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has issued a stark warning about artificial intelligence replacing human workers. Speaking to Reuters, Gates proposed that society may need to reserve around 40% of all jobs exclusively for humans as AI and robots become more capable. He called this concept the Human Reserved policy, which is distinct from existing social or caste-based reservation systems.

Gates Proposes 40% Job Reservation for Humans

Gates said AI will not only automate routine tasks but has the potential to replace human labor across multiple sectors. He urged governments, companies, and societies to think seriously about this issue now. The Human Reserved idea aims to protect jobs that could be taken away by AI, rather than providing social or caste-based quotas.

Other Tech Leaders Echo AI Job Concerns

Gates is not alone in flagging the employment risks from AI. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has also warned that AI could bring severe changes to the labor market by affecting many professions simultaneously. According to World Economic Forum data from January 2026, 54% of business leaders expect AI to reduce existing jobs in their companies, while only 24% expect new jobs to be created.

AI Threat Goes Beyond Unemployment

The danger from AI is not limited to job losses alone. Jobs provide income, identity, purpose, and social connection. If large-scale job displacement occurs, its impact could be felt across families, cities, politics, and society. Gates has also proposed creating an international monitoring body for AI, similar to frameworks used for nuclear weapons oversight, international aviation rules, and global environmental agreements.

Humans and AI Must Work Together

Gates made it clear that stopping AI entirely is not a solution. Instead, setting rules for its use and defining the role of humans in advance will be essential. The real question in the coming years will not be how powerful AI can become, but how humans and AI will work together and which fields will always need a human touch.
