Apple is bringing a new iPhone Handoff feature with iOS 27 that lets users use a single phone number across two iPhones. The feature was briefly mentioned at WWDC 2026 and a new demo has now revealed how it works. After three months of beta testing, iOS 27 is expected to launch in September 2026.
Setting Up iPhone Handoff
Users can set up the iPhone Handoff feature through the Cellular section in iPhone Settings. During setup, users must choose one iPhone as the main device and the other as a companion device. The main iPhone is the phone the user normally uses every day. The companion iPhone works as a secondary device for specific situations.
How the Dual eSIM System Works
Apple’s system keeps the user’s eSIM on the main iPhone only. The companion iPhone receives a separate companion eSIM. Users can then switch the phone number between both devices. This means users do not need a different mobile number or a physical SIM swap when switching iPhones.
Location Sharing and Network Management
The feature also affects location sharing. If a user has shared their location with someone, it shows based on the iPhone that is actively using the phone number. All mobile network settings remain managed from the main iPhone. This ensures consistent control over the primary device.
Carrier Support and Availability
iPhone Handoff requires both devices to run iOS 27. Carrier support is also mandatory for this feature to work. In the United States, T-Mobile has signed up for support. In Germany, Deutsche Telekom is on board. Information about which telecom companies will offer this feature in India is not yet available.
