The Bombay Milk Producers’ Association has raised wholesale milk prices by Rs 9 per litre across Mumbai and surrounding areas. The new rate of Rs 102 per litre will take effect from September 1, 2026 and remain valid until February 28, 2027. Mumbai residents will now pay more for milk as the association cites rising cattle feed and transport costs behind the decision. The hike comes just before the festive season when household consumption of milk and dairy products typically surges.
New Price Structure
Wholesale milk prices in Mumbai currently stand at Rs 93 per litre. The fresh hike pushes the rate to Rs 102 per litre, marking a sharp increase of nearly 10 percent. The revised pricing will stay locked for the next six months through the end of February 2027. This gives both suppliers and consumers a clear price horizon during the festival period.
Rising Input Costs Drive Decision
The association stated that prices of cattle feed including chooni, green fodder and dry fodder have jumped significantly over the past year. Dairy operators are also under intense pressure from rising transportation expenses. These combined factors made the price revision unavoidable to sustain milk supply across the Mumbai region.
Wider Impact on Dairy Items
The milk price hike is expected to trigger cost increases across dairy products such as curd, butter, ghee and sweets. Consumers may need to spend more during upcoming festivals as these items remain a staple part of celebrations. The price revision covers both wholesale and retail channels in the Mumbai metropolitan area.
Outlook for Future Revisions
The new rates will remain in place until February 28, 2027. The association has not indicated whether further revisions will be considered after the six-month period ends. Industry watchers say the direction of cattle feed prices and global dairy trends will determine what happens next. For now, Mumbai households must adjust to the higher cost of this essential commodity.
