Indians are facing a sharp rise in edible oil prices as mustard oil has crossed Rs 220 per litre in retail markets across Uttar Pradesh. The price surge comes amid supply disruptions caused by heavy rainfall, driving up costs for palm, sunflower, and groundnut oils as well. Government data shows edible oil prices have risen significantly compared to last year, putting additional burden on household budgets.

Mustard Oil Hits Record Highs

Mustard oil is now selling at Rs 220 per kilogram in retail markets of Sultanpur, Jaunpur, and neighbouring districts in Uttar Pradesh. The price has climbed sharply within just one month. Mustard seed is trading between Rs 7,000 and Rs 7,500 per quintal, with farmers expecting it to reach Rs 8,000 soon.

National Average Shows Steady Climb

According to the central government’s Consumer Department, the all-India average price of mustard oil stands at Rs 197.25 per litre. A month ago, it was Rs 194.15. On August 15 last year, the price was Rs 188.20 per litre. The consistent rise reflects growing pressure on edible oil supplies across the country.

Palm Oil Up 14 Percent Year-on-Year

Palm oil prices have also risen substantially. On August 15 this year, palm oil was priced at Rs 149.57 per litre. Last year on the same date, it stood at Rs 130.24. This marks an increase of nearly Rs 20 per litre, or about 14 percent over the past 12 months.

Sunflower and Groundnut Oil Follow Trend

Sunflower oil has recorded a 19 percent year-on-year jump. Its current price is Rs 191.16 per litre compared to Rs 159 last August 15. Groundnut oil now costs Rs 205.39 per litre, up from Rs 185.62 a year ago, registering a 10 percent increase. The overall trend shows that all major edible oils have become more expensive.

Rain Disrupts Supply Chains

Heavy rainfall across producing regions has disrupted supply chains from farms to markets. Vegetables have also become costlier due to the same weather-related issues. Analysts expect edible oil prices to remain elevated in the coming weeks unless supply conditions improve significantly.
