Indian Railways is upgrading the IRCTC ticket booking system to handle five times more traffic during peak hours. The new next-generation system will process over 1.5 lakh tickets per minute, up from the current 32,000 tickets per minute. This upgrade directly targets the slow website crashes and login failures that plague Tatkal and festival season bookings.
Massive Capacity Boost for Peak Hours
The current NGeT system manages about 32,000 tickets per minute. The upgraded system will push this capacity beyond 1.5 lakh tickets per minute, according to an Indian Express report. This five-fold increase means millions of simultaneous booking requests can be handled without server overload. The system aims to eliminate the common problems of slow page loads, payment failures, and website freezes during high-traffic periods.
Enquiry System Also Gets an Upgrade
The Passenger Reservation System enquiry capacity will jump from 4 lakh enquiries per minute to over 40 lakh per minute. This upgrade will help passengers check train seat availability, route details, and other information without delays. The new system ensures that even when millions search for trains simultaneously, the response remains fast and reliable.
Focus on Tatkal and Holiday Travelers
Tatkal ticket booking sees the heaviest traffic within minutes of opening. A delay of even a few seconds can mean the difference between a confirmed seat and a waiting list. The upgraded system directly addresses this pain point by handling higher concurrent traffic. IRCTC is also working on a new beta website version to further improve the booking experience.
Next-Gen Reservation System
Indian Railways and IRCTC are strengthening the online booking infrastructure with a next-generation Passenger Reservation System. The new system is designed to handle lakhs of simultaneous booking attempts without performance degradation. This upgrade will provide significant relief to passengers booking tickets during festive seasons, holidays, and the daily Tatkal rush.
