WhatsApp is testing a game-changing feature that lets users add third-party AI agents directly inside the app. The popular messaging platform will allow you to chat with AI bots from different services without leaving the app. WABetaInfo spotted this new capability in WhatsApp Beta for Android version 2.26.35.3.
New Agent Section in WhatsApp Settings
The feature adds a dedicated Agent section inside the app settings. Users can browse compatible third-party AI services and configure them for direct conversations. Each agent can be assigned a custom name and profile photo. WhatsApp will support up to five agents per account at a time.
How the AI Agent Setup Works
Users need to generate an API key from WhatsApp after selecting an agent. This key must be entered into the service that hosts the AI agent to link both platforms. The setup process may vary across different service providers. Users can also generate a new key to reset the connection anytime.
Dedicated Chat for Each Agent
Once linked, each AI agent operates in its own separate chat window. The agent has no access to the user’s other chats, contacts, or media files. WhatsApp will not allow adding agents to group chats or communities. This ensures your personal conversations remain isolated from the AI interactions.
Privacy and Encryption Details
Third-party agent chats will not use WhatsApp’s end-to-end encryption. Messages sent to an agent pass through Meta’s servers to the agent developer. This gives the developer access to conversations as part of the service. However, WhatsApp will continue using end-to-end encryption for personal chats and calls between users.
Limited Beta Rollout for Now
WhatsApp is currently rolling out this feature to a limited number of Android beta users. Most users cannot see the Agent section yet. WhatsApp has not announced a timeline for the wider public release. The feature remains in active testing and development.
